East Window

Our Calvary Good Friday Window

When our church building was dedicated in 1930, the Good Friday window was the only stained glass window that had been completed. This window contains approximately 6,000 pieces of hand-decorated colored glass. Appropriately, the theme of this window is Calvary with the three crosses: Jesus in the center, the penitent thief to his right (our left), and the unrepentant thief on his left. The thieves are tied to their crosses, but Jesus is nailed to his cross.

The center panel shows Christ on the cross. His mother Mary and beloved disciple John are at the foot of the cross. Just below this is a depiction of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane. An angel stands before him, holding a chalice, while Jesus says, "If possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not my will, but yours be done." Above the cross we see two angels and the risen Christ, inviting sinners to come and receive pardon.

In the panel to Christ's right (our left), we see the penitent thief with his face turned toward Jesus, the Roman centurion who acknowledged Jesus as the Son of God, Mary Magdalene kneeling and a figure representing one of the faithful crowd that followed Jesus. Below is a scene of the returning prodigal son, kneeling in penitence before his father. Above the penitent thief we see the gates of heaven guarded by three angels. Above this is the Lamb resting on the seven-sealed book, as described in the book of Revelation.

In the panel to Christ's left (our right), we see the unrepentant thief with his face turned away from Christ. Grouped about him are the high priest and indifferent soldiers casting lots for Jesus' garments.

At the top of the window, we see two angels; one holding the letter Alpha and the other, the letter Omega. This reminds us of Christ's words: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end." Above these is a crown, Christ, the King of Kings.
